Dog Attacks

Under the Dog Owners Liability Act, the owner of a dog is liable for any damages caused by a dog attack or bite. In this situation, if the dog owner is a homeowner, their home owner insurance will usually cover the cost of any claim.

In general, dogs can be wonderful companions and most dogs are usually friendly to other people and pets. However, some dogs are aggressive and even friendly dogs can react aggressively if hurt, afraid or provoked. Regardless of the reason for a dog bite or attack, the pet owner is ultimately responsible for ensuring that the behavior of their dog does not cause personal injury to members of the public.

Young children are most often the victims of bites and dog attacks with their injuries usually being to the face, head and neck.

If you or a loved one has been attacked or bitten by a dog, you should immediately address the following:

  1. Seek medical attention immediately for any dog attack injury
  2. Take photos of your injury
  3. Record the name and the address of the dog owner
  4. Request proof that the animal is up-to-date on all shots such as rabies
  5. Keep track of all expenses incurred as a result of the dog bite, for instance lost pay
  6. Keep a record of the circumstances leading up to and after the dog attack
  7. If the owner is uncooperative or the injuries are serious, call the police
