“Look Twice, Safe My Life”: Drivers Against Distraction’s Inaugural Ride

On a sunny and clear September 14, 2014, motorcyclist John “Rosie” Roseboom was struck by a distracted driver on a straight highway. The driver was in a hurry to get to his dirt bike trail and didn’t see John, a motorcycle enthusiast with 45 years of experience and founding member of the Rat River Riders.  Tragically, John died of his injuries a few days later, while the uninsured driver was charged with failing to yield from a private drive – a fine of $120.

John’s kids don’t want anyone else’s family to go through what they did. So they launched a grassroots campaign to honour their dad’s memory and raise awareness of the dangers of distracted driving and its consequence for motorcyclists. The result is an organization called DAD – Drivers Against Distraction.

This Sunday, Van Dyke Law Office is honoured to be a sponsor of the organization’s inaugural event, the Drivers Against Distraction (DAD) Ride for Motorcycle Awareness, which will take place just north of Kingston.

You can preregister for the ride online, on Saturday from 5-8pm in the lobby of the Husky at Joyceville Rd and the 401, or on Sunday morning at the Husky (coffee and registration at 8am).  Kickstands are up at 10am, and the ride will go from Husky to the Storrington Fire Hall on Battersea Road.  A BBQ lunch with motorcycle awareness program and silent auction will follow the ride at the Storrington Centre.

Participants are encouraged to share their stories of loved ones killed or injured, or their own experiences, to educate and give hope to others.  All funds raised will go to printed materials, road signs, and events to raise motorist awareness.
