The Canadian Paraplegic Association

The CPA is non-profit organization funded by Social Development Canada, United Way and other revenue sources. Its mission is to help persons with spinal cord injuries and other physical disabilities to achieve living independence, self reliance and full community participation. The CPA offers six core services with peer support being the founding principal of the association. Support is offered to help with living needs, employment, information and community fund raising.

CPA delivered peer support assistance to over 10,000 individuals and their families last year through 17 offices in Ontario including 3 in the Ottawa Kingston region.

Spinal Cord Injuries

CPA focuses primarily on spinal cord injuries which often result from auto accidents and sporting injuries. An accident that causes injury to an individual’s back can also damage the spinal cord. When the spinal cord is damaged, the neurological path is severed which disrupts the never impulses. Paralysis results in the level below the site of the spinal cord injury. About half of all people with SCI are Quadraplegic, and half are paraplegic.
